Testing for IgM antibodies against cytomegalovirus (a virus in the herpesvirus family) is suggested for people with symptoms of infection, such as fatigue, swollen lymph nodes and fever, and also for pregnant women, even without symptoms, alongside measurement of IgG antibody titres. Infection with the virus can often be asymptomatic or mistaken for a common infection. This virus is particularly dangerous for the foetus, so information about antibodies present in the body or a “recent” infection (where IgM antibody levels are elevated) is very important when assessing risks during pregnancy and starting treatment promptly.
