Measurement of IgG antibodies against cytomegalovirus (to identify a past infection).
Description
Testing for IgG antibodies against cytomegalovirus (a virus from the herpesvirus family) is suggested for people with symptoms of infection, such as fatigue, enlarged lymph nodes and fever, as well as for pregnant women, even if they have no symptoms. Infection with the virus can often be asymptomatic or mistaken for a common infection. This virus is particularly dangerous for the foetus, so information about antibodies present in the body or a “recent” infection (indicated by an elevated IgM antibody result) is very important when assessing risks during pregnancy and starting treatment promptly.
