Urine metanephrine testing is requested when a doctor suspects that a patient has a phaeochromocytoma or wants to rule it out. The test may be requested for a patient with persistent or recurrent high blood pressure accompanied by symptoms such as headaches, excessive sweating, facial flushing and a rapid heartbeat. It may also be requested for a patient with high blood pressure that is resistant to treatment (patients with phaeochromocytoma often do not respond to conventional treatment). This test is also used for monitoring after treatment for phaeochromocytoma.
