SHBG – Sex hormone-binding globulin.
Description
SHBG is a protein (globulin) that binds sex hormones. This blood test measures the concentration of this protein in the blood. A low level may indicate hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome or acromegaly, while raised levels occur with hyperthyroidism, liver cirrhosis or the use of oral contraceptives. Indications for the test include testicular dysfunction and monitoring testosterone replacement therapy.
