Rubella IgM antibodies are measured to confirm a recent rubella virus infection.
Description
Women with symptoms suggestive of rubella are tested for both IgM and IgG antibodies, whether or not they are pregnant. IgG and IgM antibody tests are also requested for pregnant women who have developed a fever and rash and/or other symptoms suggestive of rubella. Rubella IgG and IgM antibody tests may also be performed on a newborn suspected of having been infected in the womb or showing congenital abnormalities. As rubella IgG and IgM antibodies take some time to develop after infection, the tests must be repeated after two or three weeks to determine whether antibodies have appeared (if they were not detected in the first test) or whether their levels have risen or fallen during this time.
