Description

Cancer antigen CA 15-3 belongs to a group of substances known as tumour markers. It is used to monitor treatment in patients with breast cancer and during follow-up to detect recurrence early. Blood levels of the CA 15-3 marker are measured to monitor breast cancer treatment and to detect whether breast cancer has recurred or spread, mainly to the liver or bones. Testing for the CA 15-3 marker is not recommended for detecting breast cancer, as elevated levels may be caused by other factors. Other breast examinations, such as ultrasound (USG) and mammography, are recommended for diagnosing breast cancer. The CA 15-3 marker should be measured before treatment begins. A high CA 15-3 level may indicate advanced breast cancer. Therefore, Ca 15-3 is most effective in detecting advanced cancers, especially when distant metastases are present. It is also useful for monitoring whether breast cancer treatment with chemotherapy or hormone therapy is having the expected effect.
