Blood group testing (ABO and Rh systems) is essential before any surgical procedure in case a transfusion is needed.
Description
Why test your blood group?
The test determines your blood group in the AB0 system (A, B, AB or 0) and your Rh status (positive or negative, depending on whether the D antigen is present on your red blood cells). The result remains the same throughout life. In Poland, the most common group is A (approx. 40%), followed by 0 (33%), B (19%) and AB (8%); around 85% of people are Rh positive. Knowing your blood group is useful for planned surgery, during pregnancy and in emergencies, although the hospital checks your blood group again and performs compatibility testing before every transfusion.
When to consider this test
- before planned surgery (many hospitals require the result in your medical records),
- during pregnancy and when planning a pregnancy: in Rh-negative women, the risk of Rh incompatibility is assessed and anti-D immunoglobulin is given,
- before donating blood for the first time,
- for your own information, e.g. before travelling, when taking part in high-risk sports, or for your child.
How to prepare
- No preparation needed. You do not need to fast, and the time of day does not matter.
- Bring an identity document: blood group results are issued with your personal details, and your identity must be verified.
- The test is usually performed once in a lifetime. If you need a document confirming two blood group determinations, arrange a second blood collection or ask the collection point about the procedure for issuing the result.
Understanding your result
| Result | What it means |
|---|---|
| A, B, AB or 0 | the presence of A and/or B antigens on red blood cells; the plasma contains antibodies against the absent antigens |
| Rh+ (RhD positive) | D antigen present; applies to approx. 85% of the population |
| Rh– (RhD negative) | D antigen absent; Rh incompatibility is possible during pregnancy with an Rh+ partner and is prevented by anti-D immunoglobulin |
The result does not require a reference range or interpretation by a doctor. People with blood group 0 Rh– are universal red blood cell donors, and those with AB Rh+ are universal recipients, but in practice, group-compatible blood is transfused after crossmatching.
Other tests to have alongside blood group testing
Before surgery: full blood count, APTT and PT (INR), glucose, creatinine, HBs. During pregnancy in Rh– women: red blood cell antibody screen (PTA). List of tests before surgery: Badania-Medyczne.pl.
Frequently asked questions
Will a laboratory blood group result be sufficient at the hospital?
The hospital checks your blood group and performs compatibility testing before every transfusion anyway. ALAB laboratory accepts two matching, independent blood group determinations, or a single report stating that two matching determinations have been performed, as confirmation of your blood group. If you want a paper result for medical purposes, ask your doctor what format they require.
Can your blood group change?
No. It remains the same throughout life. The only exception is a bone marrow transplant, after which the recipient acquires the donor’s blood group.
Do I need to fast?
No. Diet, medicines and exercise do not affect the result. You can eat and drink as normal.

How we verify reviews
Reviews of tests can only be added by people who bought the test at BadamySie.pl. A review can only be added via the link in the e-mail sent after the order is completed, so every review is linked to an order. Our team checks text comments before they are published.
