What the blood group card panel is for

The panel includes two independent blood group determinations (ABO and RhD) from two separate blood samples, plus a blood group identification card. A single determination is sufficient to find out your blood group, but does not constitute official confirmation: Polish regulations on blood transfusion recognise a result as confirmed only when it is based on two tests using samples collected at different times and from two different venepuncture sites. The card is a durable document with no expiry date that you carry with you; in an emergency or before planned surgery, it speeds up blood preparation.

When to consider this test

  • before planned surgery or childbirth (many hospitals require a confirmed blood group in your records),
  • during pregnancy: in Rh-negative women, the result provides a basis for administering anti-D immunoglobulin,
  • for people who take part in high-risk sports, professional drivers, motorcyclists and frequent travellers,
  • for children: one additional visit provides a lifelong document,
  • if you have only one previous blood group determination and the hospital requests confirmation.

How it works

  • The first sample is collected at your chosen centre, and the second on a different day (this may be at the same centre). Show photographic identification at each visit; without identity verification, the laboratory cannot issue a confirmed result.
  • Fasting is not required; diet and medicines do not affect the result.
  • After two matching results, the laboratory records your blood group on the card. Collect the card at the sample collection centre.
  • If the results do not match (very rarely: an identification error or weak D antigen variants), the laboratory performs additional tests.

What the card contains

Field Details
ABO blood group A, B, AB or O
RhD positive or negative
Red cell alloantibodies recorded if detected (important in pregnancy and blood transfusions)
Personal details first name, surname, PESEL number, signature of the person authorising the result

The card template is specified in an annex to the regulation; entries are made by a person authorised to perform and validate transfusion immunology tests.

Other tests to consider

Before surgery: full blood count, APTT, PT (INR), glucose, creatinine, HBs. In pregnancy for Rh-negative women: red cell antibody screen (IAT). A single determination without a card: blood group.

Frequently asked questions

Why are two blood samples required?

The Minister of Health’s regulation on blood transfusion recognises a result as confirmed only when it is based on two tests using samples collected at different times and from two different venepuncture sites. Only this type of result can be entered on the card.

Will the hospital accept the card?

A blood group identification card issued on the basis of two matching determinations is a form of confirmed result recognised by the regulation. Before a transfusion, the hospital still performs a crossmatch, but does not need to determine the blood group again from scratch, saving time in an emergency.

Does a blood group result expire?

No. Your blood group remains the same throughout life (except after a bone marrow transplant). The card has no expiry date.
