AMH (anti-Müllerian hormone) test.
Opis produktu
Why AMH is tested
Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is produced in women by the cells of small, developing follicles in the ovaries, and in men by the testes. The level of AMH in the blood reflects the number of follicles, known as the ovarian reserve. The reserve naturally declines with age, and after the menopause AMH becomes practically undetectable. According to ASRM and ESHRE, AMH, together with the antral follicle count on ultrasound, is the most reliable marker of ovarian reserve and is a good predictor of how many eggs can be retrieved during stimulation in an IVF procedure. However, the test says nothing about egg quality and does not predict whether or when natural conception will occur.
When it is worth having this test
- before planned ovarian stimulation and IVF, so that the doctor can choose the right treatment,
- in the diagnosis of infertility, together with other hormone tests and ultrasound,
- with irregular periods or symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), as a supporting test,
- with symptoms of premature ovarian failure before the age of 40,
- after chemotherapy or ovarian surgery, when the doctor wants to assess ovarian function.
How to prepare
- You do not need to fast. Just avoid a heavy meal immediately before the blood draw.
- The test can be done at any time of day and on any day of the cycle, because AMH levels change very little during the cycle.
- Tell your doctor if you use hormonal contraception: sources differ on its effect on the result, so the doctor will take this into account when interpreting it.
- Rest for a few minutes before the blood draw.
How to read the result
| Result | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| within the range typical for your age | ovarian reserve appropriate for your age |
| lower than typical for your age | reduced ovarian reserve; with IVF stimulation a smaller number of eggs can be expected; in women under 40 with symptoms it may indicate premature ovarian failure |
| very low or undetectable | usually the perimenopause or menopause; it may also result from ovarian damage |
| high | a large number of follicles, often in polycystic ovary syndrome; AMH alone is not enough to diagnose PCOS; rarely it is associated with certain ovarian tumours |
AMH is not a fertility test: a low result does not mean that pregnancy is impossible, and a high one does not guarantee it. Age remains the most important factor in the chances of pregnancy. Interpretation always rests with the doctor, and the ranges given on the laboratory printout, which depend on age and method, apply.

Frequently asked questions
Does AMH have to be tested on a specific day of the cycle?
No. AMH levels change very little during the cycle, so the test can be done on any day of the cycle and at any time of day, without fasting.
Does a low AMH mean I will not get pregnant?
No. AMH shows the number of follicles in the ovaries, not the quality of the eggs, and according to ASRM and ESHRE it does not predict the chances of pregnancy. A low result matters mainly when planning IVF stimulation. It is worth discussing the result with your doctor.
Can AMH predict the age of menopause?
A low AMH may suggest that the menopause is approaching, and an undetectable one that it has already occurred. However, the test cannot accurately predict when the menopause will occur.
