Travel medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with the various medical aspects of travel. It covers:
- health risks related to various infectious pathogens
- the impact of the climate and cultural environment, changes in diet and habits, and time zone changes on the traveller’s health
- prevention and education for travellers going to tropical countries or setting off on high-altitude and diving expeditions (including pre-travel vaccinations).
Every journey involves a risk to health. It depends on:
- the destination
- living conditions
- the length of stay
The most common risks for travellers:
- travellers’ diarrhoea of various causes
- malaria
- infectious diseases ( viral hepatitis A and B, typhoid fever, cholera, diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, HIV infection, rabies, etc. )
