Opis produktu
What this package assesses
Eight tests from one blood sample covering common sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections: human immunodeficiency virus (HIV; fourth-generation test: antibodies + p24 antigen), syphilis (Wassermann screening reaction, WR), hepatitis B (HBs antigen) and C (anti-HCV antibodies), chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis IgG and IgM) and genital herpes (HSV 1/2 IgG and IgM). Also included is alanine aminotransferase (ALAT), a liver enzyme that rises during active hepatitis. Most of these infections remain symptom-free for a long time; when detected early, they can be cured or effectively managed.
When to consider these tests
- After unprotected sexual contact with a new or casual partner, or after a condom breaks,
- For symptoms such as urethral or vaginal discharge, burning when urinating, genital ulcers or a genital rash, enlarged lymph nodes, or a rash on the palms and soles,
- Before stopping condom use in a new relationship, or when planning pregnancy (both partners),
- As an annual preventive check if you frequently change partners,
- After exposure to blood (a needlestick injury, a fight or a tattoo performed in questionable conditions).
How to prepare
- Fasting is not required, and the time of day does not matter. Avoid a large meal immediately before the blood draw.
- Wait at least 4 weeks after a high-risk exposure; an earlier negative result does not rule out infection.
- If fewer than 72 hours have passed since the exposure, urgently attend an infectious diseases clinic or an emergency department: HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is effective only within this period.
- Tell your doctor about hepatitis B vaccination (anti-HBs is not included in the package; HBs antigen remains negative after vaccination) and pregnancy.
How to read the results
| Test | What a positive result usually means | Next steps |
|---|---|---|
| HIV antigen/antibody test (HIV Ag/Ab) | Probable infection (a false-positive result is possible) | Mandatory confirmation by Western blot; an infectious diseases clinic |
| Wassermann reaction (WR; syphilis) | Probable infection or a false-positive result (pregnancy, autoimmune diseases) | A confirmatory treponemal test (FTA-ABS, TPHA); penicillin treatment |
| Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBs) | Active hepatitis B infection | HBV DNA, liver function tests and a hepatologist; partner testing and vaccination of close contacts |
| Hepatitis C antibodies (anti-HCV) | Exposure to the virus, with active or past infection | HCV RNA; active infection can be treated effectively in 8–12 weeks |
| Chlamydia IgM / IgG | IgM: recent infection; IgG: past or chronic infection | PCR testing of a swab or urine sample, antibiotics and partner treatment |
| Herpes simplex virus antibodies (HSV IgM / IgG) | IgM: recent infection; IgG: past infection, with the virus remaining in the body | Most adults have HSV-1 IgG (cold sores); HSV-2 and symptoms are clinically relevant |
| Raised alanine aminotransferase (ALAT) | Liver damage, including damage caused by viral hepatitis | Full liver function tests and an ultrasound scan |
Negative results after 4 weeks are reliable for HIV in most cases; for syphilis, HCV and HBV, a doctor may recommend repeat testing 12 weeks after exposure.
Other tests to consider
For urethral or vaginal symptoms: gonorrhoea (PCR), Mycoplasma / Ureaplasma, Chlamydia PCR; for women, human papillomavirus (HPV) testing and cervical cytology. After hepatitis B vaccination: hepatitis B surface antibodies (anti-HBs). Learn more: Badania-Medyczne.pl.
Frequently asked questions
When should I have tests after a high-risk exposure?
No earlier than 4 weeks afterwards. A fourth-generation HIV test (antigen + antibodies) using venous blood usually detects infection 18–45 days after exposure; antibodies to HCV and syphilis may appear later, so after a negative result a doctor will often recommend repeat testing after 3 months.
My HIV result is positive. What happens next?
A screening test requires confirmation (Western blot or a differentiation test). False-positive results can occur during pregnancy, after vaccinations and in autoimmune diseases. Do not interpret the result yourself; the laboratory arranges confirmatory testing, and further treatment is provided by an infectious diseases clinic.
Does the package detect gonorrhoea and HPV?
No. Gonorrhoea, mycoplasmas and ureaplasmas are detected using a swab or urine sample (PCR), and HPV using a cervical swab. Urethral or vaginal symptoms require a separate test.
