Quantitative faecal calprotectin test.
Result turnaround time: up to 3 working days.
Description
Why faecal calprotectin is tested
Calprotectin is a protein found mainly in neutrophils, a type of white blood cell. When the intestinal lining is inflamed, these cells move into the intestinal lumen and release calprotectin, which passes into the stool. Its concentration rises in proportion to the severity of inflammation. The test helps distinguish inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis) from irritable bowel syndrome, in which there is no inflammation. It is also used to monitor treatment and detect relapses early.
When to consider this test
- chronic diarrhoea or abdominal pain lasting for weeks,
- suspected irritable bowel syndrome when inflammatory disease needs to be ruled out,
- mucus or blood in the stool, unintentional weight loss (alongside an urgent medical consultation),
- diagnosed inflammatory bowel disease: assessing disease activity and treatment effectiveness,
- during remission, when your doctor wants to detect a relapse early.
How to prepare
No special diet or fasting is required. Pass stool into a clean, dry receptacle or onto a collection pad: the sample must not come into contact with toilet water, urine or cleaning products. Using the scoop provided with the container, collect small portions from several areas of the stool (approximately the size of a walnut in total, up to 1/4 of the container), seal tightly and take it to the collection point. Calprotectin remains stable in the sample for several days. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. ibuprofen, naproxen, acetylsalicylic acid) and proton pump inhibitors may raise the result; do not stop taking them without your doctor’s approval, but let your doctor know you are taking them.
How to interpret the result
| Result (adults and children aged 4 years and over) | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| below 50 µg/g | no active bowel inflammation; inflammatory bowel disease is unlikely |
| 50–150 µg/g | borderline value: may be due to an infection, NSAID use or food intolerance; the test is usually repeated after 4–6 weeks |
| above 150 µg/g | active bowel inflammation, requiring further investigation, often a colonoscopy |
| above 300 µg/g in someone in remission | possible relapse of inflammatory bowel disease, even before symptoms appear |
Values are naturally higher in infants and young children, so results are assessed according to age. A normal result does not rule out colorectal cancer or other conditions, and the thresholds on the laboratory report apply.
Other tests to consider
If you have bowel symptoms, consider: faecal occult blood, Helicobacter pylori in stool, coeliac disease antibodies, CRP, full blood count. Read more: Badania-Medyczne.pl.
Frequently asked questions
Does raised calprotectin mean Crohn’s disease?
Not always. Calprotectin indicates bowel inflammation but does not identify its cause. Bowel infections, NSAID use, food intolerances and coeliac disease can also cause a raised result, so further tests are needed for a diagnosis.
Can calprotectin distinguish IBS from bowel inflammation?
This is its main use. There is no inflammation in irritable bowel syndrome, so the result is usually normal, and a low result makes inflammatory bowel disease unlikely. This may help the doctor avoid an unnecessary colonoscopy.
Do I need to stop taking painkillers before the test?
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, may raise the result. Do not stop medication on your own: ask your doctor whether you should stop taking it before collecting the sample, and for how long.

How we verify reviews
Reviews of tests can only be added by people who bought the test at BadamySie.pl. A review can only be added via the link in the e-mail sent after the order is completed, so every review is linked to an order. Our team checks text comments before they are published. We also publish negative reviews, without changing their content; we only reject spam, offensive language and personal data. The stars above the test description (“Rating: … · … ratings”) are votes from website visitors and are not verified. The reviews on the “Customer reviews” page are recommendations from our Facebook profile.
