NSE (neuron-specific enolase). Remember! A normal level does not rule out a tumour. Moderately elevated marker levels may occur in non-cancerous conditions. Tumour marker testing has a supporting role and cannot replace a clinical examination.
Description
This marker is normally present in cells of the central and peripheral nervous systems, as well as in the pituitary gland, adrenal medulla and pineal gland. NSE is normally found within these cells. If the cells are damaged, this marker can be measured in blood plasma. NSE levels above the normal range may indicate a neuroendocrine tumour, glioma or small-cell lung cancer. The marker may also appear in plasma in other circumstances, e.g. in septic shock or following a head injury.
