An insulin curve test is ordered when diabetes is suspected. It is a blood test that measures fasting insulin levels, followed by measurements 60 min and 120 min after drinking a solution containing 75 g of glucose (three blood samples).
IMPORTANT! This test requires a written recommendation from a doctor and glucose purchased in advance from a pharmacy.
Description
An insulin response curve is an oral glucose tolerance test (75 g) in which blood insulin levels are measured while fasting, and at 60 and 120 minutes after drinking the glucose solution. A doctor most often orders this test when insulin resistance or impaired insulin secretion is suspected. To have the test, you need to purchase 75 g of glucose from a pharmacy. The first blood sample is taken after fasting. The nurse then prepares a glucose solution ( 75g of glucose in 250-300ml of water), which must be drunk within a maximum of 5 minutes. The next sample is taken 60 min after drinking the glucose solution, and the final sample after 120 minutes. It is important not to undertake any physical activity throughout the procedure, as this may distort the results. You must remain in the waiting room until the final blood sample has been taken.
