This test detects antibodies against red blood cell antigens before a blood transfusion, during pregnancy and after childbirth.
The test is also known as the Coombs test or indirect antiglobulin test.
Description
The test is also known as an immune antibody test, Coombs test or indirect antiglobulin test.
The antiglobulin test detects circulating antibodies directed against red blood cells (erythrocytes). These antibodies develop following exposure to another person’s red blood cell antigens, mainly through a blood transfusion or during pregnancy and childbirth. The PTA technique is also used for crossmatching, which checks whether the blood recipient has immune antibodies that could destroy the donor’s red blood cells. During pregnancy, PTA is used to detect antibodies that could cross the placenta and attack the baby’s red blood cells, causing haemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn. For this purpose, the test is routinely performed in all pregnant women in early pregnancy (up to 12 weeks).
