Acid phosphatase (ACP) measurement is used when conditions such as Paget’s disease, prostate cancer or prostatitis are suspected.
Description
Measuring phosphatase concentration is useful in diagnosing many diseases. Acid phosphatase testing is also used to assess damage caused by enzymatic kidney diseases, liver disease or heart disease. ACP levels are measured in certain chronic metabolic bone diseases when conditions such as Gaucher disease or Paget’s disease are suspected. Acid phosphatase concentration testing is used to detect benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate adenoma and prostate cancer. This blood test is also requested by a doctor when symptoms or findings include bone pain, pathological fractures, changes on bone X-rays or disturbances in calcium metabolism. Phosphatase levels are measured as part of standard blood biochemistry testing.
