Travel medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with the various medical aspects of travel. It covers:

• health risks related to various infectious pathogens
• the impact of the climate and cultural environment, changes in diet and habits, and time zone changes on the traveller’s health
• prevention and education for travellers going to tropical countries or setting off on high-altitude and diving expeditions (including pre-travel vaccinations).

Every journey involves a risk to health. It depends on:

• the destination
• living conditions
• the length of stay

The most common risks for travellers:

• travellers’ diarrhoea of various causes
• malaria
• infectious diseases ( viral hepatitis A and B, typhoid fever, cholera, diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, HIV infection, rabies, etc. )
• numerous tropical diseases ( dengue, yellow fever, amoebiasis, filariasis, etc. )
• dangers from tropical animals
• time zone changes
• altitude sickness
• other diseases
• “traveller’s syndrome”
