A glucose tolerance test is ordered when diabetes is suspected. It is a blood test that measures fasting glucose levels and then glucose levels after drinking a solution containing 75 g of glucose (two blood samples).
IMPORTANT! You must have a written recommendation from a doctor and purchase glucose from a pharmacy before the test.
Description
The oral glucose tolerance test is used to diagnose diabetes in people with normal or slightly elevated fasting glucose levels. It is also performed during pregnancy to detect gestational diabetes. To have the test, you need to purchase 75 g of glucose from a pharmacy. The first blood sample is taken after fasting. A nurse then prepares a glucose solution ( 75g of glucose in 250-300ml of water), which you must drink within a maximum of 5 minutes. The next sample is taken after 120 minutes. It is important not to engage in any physical activity throughout the test, as this may distort the results. You must remain in the waiting room until the final blood sample has been taken.
