Description
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (corticotropin, abbreviated as ACTH) is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that stimulates the adrenal cortex to secrete cortisol and, to a lesser extent, aldosterone, androgens and oestrogens. ACTH levels are measured to diagnose adrenal insufficiency or an overactive adrenal cortex, during treatment with exogenous glucocorticoids, or in the differential diagnosis of vitiligo.
