Stool culture is one of the basic tests used to diagnose gastrointestinal conditions.
Description
If a bacterial or fungal cause of symptoms is suspected (most commonly diarrhoea, abdominal pain or weight loss), a stool sample is sent to a microbiology laboratory. There, a stool culture is performed using special culture media that support the growth of microorganisms. It is also possible to detect toxic substances produced by bacteria in the stool. Once the culture has identified the microorganism, the microbiologist may perform antibiotic susceptibility testing, which assesses how sensitive the bacteria are to different antibiotics. The result helps the doctor decide which treatment to use in each case.
