Gynaecological ultrasound (transvaginal)

A gynaecological ultrasound scan is performed using a transvaginal probe protected by a disposable latex cover coated with gel. The scan can assess the organs in the pelvis (the reproductive organs, including the lining of the uterine cavity, the body of the uterus, the cervix, the ovary and the pouch of Douglas).

Transvaginal ultrasound is also performed:
-for abnormal vaginal bleeding;
-to investigate lower abdominal pain;
-for period-related symptoms;
-for menstrual irregularities (including absent periods);
-to identify the cause of infertility (as one of the first diagnostic steps);
-if ovarian abnormalities are suspected (polycystic ovary syndrome, cysts);
-to assess the menstrual cycle (ovulation);
-if structural abnormalities of the reproductive organs are suspected.

** Gynaecological ultrasound – transvaginal – IS NOT an obstetric ultrasound scan (for pregnant women)!
