SCC antigen tumour marker. Remember! A normal level does not rule out cancer. Moderately raised tumour marker levels may occur in non-cancerous conditions. Tumour marker testing has a supporting role and cannot replace a clinical examination.
Description
A marker for tumours arising from squamous epithelium. The test is performed when cancers such as cervical cancer are suspected, and to monitor treatment and the course of the disease. Blood SCC-Ag levels rise in the presence of tumours arising from squamous epithelium, such as cervical cancer, lung cancer (SCC), and cancers of the skin, head (oral cavity) and neck (larynx, oesophagus), gastrointestinal tract, ovaries and urinary tract. The marker level rises in proportion to the stage of the cancer. High SCC-Ag levels before treatment indicate a poor prognosis.
SCC-Ag is useful in diagnosing cancer recurrence and monitoring treatment and disease progression. However, raised levels can also occur in many non-cancerous diseases and conditions. The result should be discussed with a doctor.
SCC-Ag is a glycoprotein that occurs in two fractions: neutral and acidic. The neutral fraction is present in both normal and cancerous cells, while the acidic fraction is found mainly in cancerous cells. The acidic fraction is released into the bloodstream.
Turnaround time for results: approx. 3 working days
