In a healthy person, protein should not be present in the urine. The presence of protein in the urine is called proteinuria. Protein in the urine may have physiological or pathological causes. Physiological proteinuria may result from very strenuous exercise, a high fever, hyperthermia (rapid overheating or cooling of the body) or pregnancy in the 3rd trimester. Pathological proteinuria may be caused by serious urinary tract conditions such as kidney stones, glomerulonephritis or toxic kidney damage. Protein in the urine may also indicate heart failure, high blood pressure, diabetes, poisoning by nephrotoxic compounds or even multiple myeloma (a type of cancer). If, for example, protein is found in a sample submitted for routine urinalysis, the doctor requests a 24-hour urine collection to check how much protein is excreted over a day.
