Triglycerides are one of the lipid fractions found in the blood.
Description
An increased triglyceride level in the blood is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Levels above the normal range may be caused by factors including obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, diabetes, hypothyroidism, gout, pregnancy, and medicines such as oral contraceptives or steroids. In some people, high triglyceride levels may be genetically determined. Raised triglyceride levels together with high LDL cholesterol significantly increase the risk of stroke or heart attack. The test should be performed in the morning, approximately 14 hours after your last meal.
