Head and brain MRI before and after contrast (CM)

Magnetic resonance imaging (MR) is an imaging method that produces highly detailed images of the body’s organs and tissues without exposure to X-rays. MR images are produced by applying radio waves of different frequencies to the body while it is positioned in a strong magnetic field (inside the MR scanner).

</colgroup>

This scan does not require any special preparation, but you are asked to avoid eating for 3 hours and drinking for 1 hour before the scan, particularly for scans with contrast.

If intravenous contrast is needed, you must first have a blood test to measure your creatinine level in blood serum.

During the MR scan, you will be in a static magnetic field.

For safety, you must tell staff before the scan about any implanted medical devices, internal prostheses or other metallic foreign bodies, as these could become excessively hot or malfunction in a strong magnetic field – you will therefore be asked to complete a detailed questionnaire before the scan.

Please bring the following to your MR scan:

  • A referral for the MR scan;

  • Proof of identity;

  • Blood test results showing your creatinine level (valid for 7 days) – for scans with contrast;

  • Previous images and reports from CT (TK), MRI (MR), X-ray (RTG) and ultrasound (USG) examinations, and hospital discharge summaries.

    Most MR scans take 20 to 60 minutes, depending on the area being examined. The radiographer performing the scan will give you detailed information about the entire procedure. MRI results are usually ready for collection within 48h of the scan.
