AFP (alpha-fetoprotein) is a glycoprotein produced in fetal tissues and by tumours arising from the internal reproductive organs. Elevated AFP levels occur in most patients with primary liver cancer and in some patients with germ cell tumours of the testes and ovaries. Generally, the higher the AFP level, the larger and more advanced the tumour. If a patient responds well to cancer treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy), the AFP level should decrease to the levels seen in healthy people. AFP is not always a tumour marker. It is also produced by the fetus, so serum AFP levels are usually elevated in pregnant women and newborns.<\/p>\n
