Its blood concentration is the best single indicator of iron stores: it falls first, before anaemia develops, allowing deficiency to be detected while the full blood count is still normal. It is also an acute-phase protein, so its level rises during infection and inflammation, which must be considered when interpreting the result.<\/p>\n<h2>When to consider this test<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>persistent tiredness, hair loss, brittle nails, pallor, breathlessness or restless legs syndrome,<\/li>\n<li>heavy periods, pregnancy or planning a pregnancy, a vegetarian or vegan diet, or frequent blood donation,<\/li>\n<li>anaemia on a full blood count (low Hb, MCV), to distinguish iron deficiency from anaemia of chronic disease,<\/li>\n<li>endurance athletes, children during periods of rapid growth and people over 60,<\/li>\n<li>monitoring iron treatment (usually after 2\u20133 months),<\/li>\n<li>suspected iron overload: a family history of haemochromatosis, joint pain or raised liver function test results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to prepare<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Fasting is not required. The sample can be collected at any time of day.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid testing during an infection or within 2 weeks afterwards, as the result will be raised and may mask deficiency.<\/li>\n<li>If you take iron supplements, tell your doctor; to assess stores without treatment, supplements are stopped for a few days after consultation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Understanding your result<\/h2>\n<p>Results are reported in \u00b5g\/l (ng\/ml). Laboratory reference ranges are broad (ALAB: women 15\u2013250, men 20\u2013500 \u00b5g\/l), but values at the lower end of the range may already indicate deficiency. The result is interpreted alongside a full blood count and CRP.<\/p>\n<h2>Other tests to consider alongside ferritin<\/h2>\n<p>Most commonly: <a href=\"\/en\/?s=morfologia&amp;post_type=product\">full blood count<\/a>, <a href=\"\/en\/?s=\u017celazo&amp;post_type=product\">iron<\/a>, <a href=\"\/en\/?s=transferyna&amp;post_type=product\">transferrin<\/a> or TIBC, <a href=\"\/en\/?s=CRP&amp;post_type=product\">CRP<\/a>, and, if anaemia is present, <a href=\"\/en\/?s=witamina+B12&amp;post_type=product\">vitamin B12<\/a> and <a href=\"\/en\/?s=kwas+foliowy&amp;post_type=product\">folate<\/a>. If iron or glucose is being measured in the same sample, attend fasting.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<details>\n<summary>My full blood count is normal, but my ferritin is low. What does this mean?<\/summary>\n<p>This is latent iron deficiency: stores are depleted, but haemoglobin is still maintained. It causes tiredness, hair loss, brittle nails and reduced exercise capacity. If untreated, it progresses to anaemia.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<details>\n<summary>Why is my ferritin high even though I do not take iron?<\/summary>\n<p>Ferritin rises with inflammation, infection, liver disease, obesity and alcohol consumption, sometimes to two or three times its usual level.
